The Remodeling Business Owner’s Dilemma: Why Are You Always Putting Out Fires?
Let’s be honest – you didn’t start your business just to feel like you’re constantly living in crisis mode, right? Yet here you are, running from one problem to the next, feeling more like a firefighter than a remodeling pro. But imagine if your business actually ran smoothly, with fewer headaches and more time to focus on growth.
Sound too good to be true? Not at all. In fact, this transformation is entirely possible if you take a few intentional steps. Let’s dive into why this chaos is hurting your business, the root causes, and, most importantly, how The Remodeling Academy and our affiliate program can help turn things around.
The Pain: Constant Firefighting
We get it – being a remodeling business owner can feel like an endless battle against unexpected problems. You’re always in reactive mode, putting out fires that, frankly, drain your energy and resources. Here are a few things you’re probably dealing with:
Too Many Problems, Not Enough Time: There’s an ever-growing list of things demanding your attention.
Do you seem to go from the endless cycle of not having enough work to finally landing several projects only to then discover that instead of lots of profit the only thing you have done is created lots of problems as a result of now being too busy. Which then leads you to surmise that your only solution is be afraid of growth. This fear is a founded on the belief more jobs automatically equals more problems as a result of not knowing how to prevent the problem freeway you are on?
Have you been guilty on doing knee jerk quick fixes, as opposed to taking time to develop a well though out real solution grounded in preventing the situation from coming about in the first place?
Are your temporary patches only creating the illusion of control but solve nothing long-term.
Finding yourself with recurring Issues: The same problems pop up over and over again – an endless cycle of frustration.
How about a case of emergency overload as well? Causing you to handle only the urgent, which leaves no time for the truly important.
To add insult to injury is your overall performance dropping? Are you struggling to maintain your business’s quality, reputation, and profits. Are all of these resulting in you suffering long term as you are forced to focus on immediate survival, and not able to think about or plan or start working towards growth?
Each of these issues has a cascading effect, dragging down your team’s morale, client satisfaction, and ultimately, your profits. But what’s the underlying cause?
The Root Problem: Lack of Prevention and Planning
Firefighting happens because the causes of these crises are often overlooked. (ie lack of frameworks). The good news? Most issues stem from a few simple, preventable mistakes.
Poor Communication: In remodeling, assumptions can be deadly. Your clients and team aren’t mind readers. Saying "paint the kitchen" might mean one thing to you and something entirely different to your crew or client. Details matter.
Paint what, paint it how, paint it with what specific product and technique. How many applications, etc? Learning opportunity- Paint= Paint the existing living room all 4 walls including the existing drywall and the newly patched areas. Painting to include paing the baseboard trim for all 4 living room walls (baseboard only, not the existing stain grade shoe molding). Baseboard trim to be prepped by being wiped down with TSP and scuffed up with 120grit sandpaper. Baseboard trim to receive two top coats of Sherwin Williams
Interior Super paint in a semi gloss finish and the color is bright white. The 4 living walls will be de-glossed with TSP followed by a primer coat of Sherwin Williams Interior Multi Surface primer in white applied with both a brush and roller. Two top coats will be applied to all 4 living room walls, using Sherwin Williams Super Paint in and eggshell finish in Durons' Seel Grey' color. Wall paint to be applied with roller and brush. We will not be painting the ceiling, nor will we be painting either the window trim or door trim/casings. This how you convey the details of what paint the living means.
How is Incomplete Planning affecting you business? Every project needs a roadmap. That means considering everyone’s role, getting crystal clear on expectations, and building in a process to check and double-check each step.
Are you tempted to rush through details? What about when you’re short on time? It’s tempting to skip over the “small stuff,” but as the saying goes, “The devil is in the details.” Small misunderstandings now can turn into massive headaches later.
So, what’s the alternative? Imagine if you had the systems, frameworks and support to prevent fires rather than scrambling to put them out.
